Trademarks don’t provide you a carte-blanche right over the name to use it everywhere. There is a narrow band of applicability, which in this case happens to be “mobile apps for instant-communication”. As long as the npm developer did not develop a similar app, there is no question of confusion with the existing trademark and Kik don’t have a legal leg to stand upon.
