The research abounds mobile robotics and automated guided vehicle has picked up in India in the last 3–4 years. Before that time AGVs were called a driverless system. Through the years, advances in electronics have led to advances in guided vehicles. Nowadays, the technology of AGV is widely used in the industrial environment to perform a variety of task that involves automation. Technological developments have given AGVs more flexibility and capability in performing its tasks.

How does it work?

The most flexible way of automating inventory transportation in the warehouse involves using Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs). AGVs are wheel-based and computer-controlled load carriers, running on batteries and moving around the warehouse without requiring a driver. They navigate through the use of guidance technologies such as floor surface magnetic tape, optical sensors, lasers, and magnet-based inertial guidance. Routes are pre-programmed but the industry is also seeing the emergence of truly autonomous AGVs that do not require pre-programmed routes. AGVs can be used alongside humans in shared spaces when fitted with additional sensor technology that enables obstacle detection and collision avoidance.

Scope of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)-

The scope of AGV in industries has exploded in recent years. As per the latest market research, the global automated guided vehicle market was worth USD 3.89 billion in 2018 and is projected to reach USD 10 billion by 2024. The e-commerce sector, including the giants Amazon, Flipkart, Ali Baba, has more than doubled in three years, with new companies popping up almost daily. A rapid growth in these e-commerce businesses, stock keeping units (SKUs) are increasing in both volume and variety by fixed automation system with automated material movement. Flexible automated solutions are a way to handle a higher demand of customers. Consumer behavior is evolving, raising the demand for flexibility in logistics. AGV solutions fulfill many demands and have a natural place in this new world.

Automated guided vehicles offer a multitude of advantages such as a reduction in operational cost, enhanced workforce safety, and decrement in production time. Growing implementation of mobile robots across the world and measures to enhance workplace safety and productivity are some other factors leading to the adoption of AGV.
