Dziewczynka: Jiev. Chin. Ka.

Nia was at the doctor’s this morning and the physician’s assistant asked her where she was from. She told him she went to school in Poland and he said that he used to play soccer with a Polish guy. He said the Polish guy used to call him “Dziewczynka” (jiev-chin-ka) when they were playing soccer together. The physician’s assistant seemed pretty proud of his nickname until Nia informed him that “dziewczynka” is Polish for “little girl”.

The saddest part was how his astonishment had faded into embarrassment and denial: “No, no, Dziewczynka: Jiev. Chin. Ka.” He repeated it as if she misheard him. She had not misheard him, so she nodded and he moved on.
