My journey from Content Writing to a career in Digital Marketing

If you are a content writer and haven’t been living under a rock, then you must be aware that fresh, relevant and engaging content is the pulse for gaining widespread attention.

But is that all?

We cannot fool our audience if the content lacks salt but too much salt can also make the readers leave with bad taste. So, how much is too much? SEO and keyword stuffing can make the content visible but not necessarily viable.

Most of the times we do not know what we don’t know! And that’s the problem.

Investing years into content writing and blogging, I’ve seen myself being pulled into the void of not knowing enough, seeing my posts perish in oblivion and that’s way worse than the writer’s block!

Finally, I found the answers to all my knowledge gaps in the Digital Marketing Nanodegree Program by Udacity. Co-created with the giants from the Social Media Arena such as Facebook Blueprint, Google, Hubspot to name a few.

Things have not been the same ever since!

Here are some of the valuable insights this course has helped me in recognizing and writing some kick-ass content. It’s time to pay it forward!

1. Know Your Goals

We all want to go viral. Period!

But mostly we don’t know why! NOT EVERYONE GETS YOUR VISION! Your role is to sell your goals or Marketing Objective and sell it through well-knitted words.

What do you hope to achieve with your content, what are your primary KPIs?

2. The Art of Storytelling

Every story has a target audience. The subtle art of storytelling depends heavily on knowing exactly who you are writing your content for. NOT EVERYONE IS YOUR AUDIENCE!

How to know who’s your audience?

3. Strategizing the Content

As hard it is to predict the fluctuating user behavior, there’s no arguing the fact that good content is immortal. NOT EVERYONE READS! And your job is to convert them by writing compelling content.

How do you know what kind of content will appeal most to your audience- articles, listicles or infographics?

4. Distributing & Promoting the Content

If you are like most people you would broadcast your content in reigning social media channels and wait for the miracle to happen! NOT EVERYONE HAS AN ACCOUNT EVERYWHERE!

Do you know the exact social media channels (website pages, business blog, Social Networking sites etc.) to publish your posts?

5. Measuring the Impact

People decide in the first 15 seconds if they want to continue reading your content. NOT EVERYONE HAS TIME!

Do you know how to measure and analyze the user experience metrics on your website or blog? Was your content engaging and had reader wanting for more?

At the end of each pointer is a hard-hitting question you must ask yourself. And if you find yourself going far down the rabbit hole, then a Digital Marketing Certification is your next best plan of action!

So, what are you waiting for?
