Impression materials are essential in prosthodontics for capturing intraoral structures to create precise final restorations. The quality and accuracy of these restorations depend greatly on the choice of impression materials and the techniques employed. Elastomeric impression materials, such as addition silicones and polyether’s, are favoured for their exceptional elastic recovery and their ability to be removed from the mouth with comfort and flexibility.

Traditional Elastomeric Impression Materials:

Dental impression materials have evolved significantly over the years. Initially, inelastic materials like plaster, impression compound, and zinc-oxide–eugenol were used. These were replaced by elastic impression materials, including aqueous materials like agar and alginate, as well as nonaqueous elastomers such as polysulfides, silicones, and polyethers.

Agar hydrocolloids, which consist of agar, borax, potassium sulphate, preservatives, and flavouring agents, were used but are now mostly replaced by rubber impression materials. Agar hydrocolloids require a tempered water bath and prefabricated metal trays.
