Why Netflix like dark future?

Have you ever looked at collection in Netflix’s sci-fi genre? Starting with Black Mirror, stranger things, walking dead etc. Almost every sci-fi movie/series had some sort of dark theme associated with it. It’s either earth dying, or robots taking over or aliens exterminating life or zombies or virus, or God deciding to end the world.

Why is there is lot of dark-themed content?

One conspiracy theory may be that, Governments have started the propaganda to make their audience believe that the future is bleak, hence very less expectation on Government. Naah..!!, that doesn’t sound right.

What else could it be? Why is future always bleak in these stories?

I have an explanation for this. Initially, people observed that audience really like dystopian themed movies, when in actual audience like those movies because it’s just good writing/movie. But for people behind the strategy, looking at the statistics, it kind of made sense to make more of such content, then more people started watching that content, reinforced by success, they make more of such content. Basically bootstrapping the vicious circle of dark-themed content.

Technically speaking, problem is that they are attributing it to the wrong tag of the content when they really should tag it only after A/B testing the content. Like Movie A — Dark themed, Movie B — Bright themed. But we never see any content producers trying this. In laymen’s words, they are following same formula for success rather than trying to be more creative.

Story tellers has to realise that they wield the power to influence the audience in anyway they want to and be responsible about it.

Another alternative explanation, I heard ( In ref to MadMen :) ) is that humans inherently have a death wish, or in this case they like to watching our civilisation die. Or more optimistically, they like to look at hope beyond doomsday.

Are we pessimists in general? Or process of content creation is broken? Either way, What happened to stories about good bright future?

Note: if you happen to know any good science fiction content, please suggest.
