Installation:

  1. Open Settings Application and chose General

2. From General page select Keyboard

3. From Keyboards page, click on Keyboards option

4. From Keyboards management page use ‘Add new Keyboard…’ option to chose if not already installed. You can install & select one of many languages listed in the Add New Keyboard… page. Once installed, the keyboard will list after the default keyboards (Usually English, Emoji).

Usage:

Typing is as simple as English but since most of the Telugu letter are compound, you need to practice a little bit before able to type fluently. Don’t give up yet.

Let’s get around the keyboard layout and arrangement of keys.

  1. Default mode (English): When a text field is pressed in any application the default keyboard (or last used language) is popped-up.

Click on the Globe icon shown at the bottom of the screen to switch between all the languages installed in above stage. If you have only Telugu installed besides English, clicking globe icon simply switch between English and Telugu. As you might already know Emoji keyboard accessible through the smiley icon [:)] beside [123] button.

2. Telugu keyboard default mode:

In this layout first set of hallulu is encircled below. Achulu are given in joining mode such that you can start typing words by combining them with hallulu.

3. Shift Mode: This mode can be accessed by pressing the upper case button on the left side (just above the [123] key).

In this mode second set of hallulu given along with full form of achulu. These set of achulu will not join with hallulu hence should be used as independently. Once exception is the encircled ones which still can be joined with hallulu.

4. Numeric mode: This can be accessed by pressing the [123] key

In this mode most of the special cases are accessible along side English and Telugu numbers. Unfortunately Telugu numbers are accessible only on long press of corresponding number, as shown below.

5. Extended Numeric mode: This mode mode can be accessed by pressing [#+=] in numeric mode.

In this mode few other symbols are accessible along side some special characters in Telugu too.

Examples:

I am trying to add few complex examples which frequently asked by users.

  1. క్ష = క + ్ + ష

2. ఆన్‌లైన్ instead of ఆన్లైన్

Use zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ) to combine ఆన్ + లైన్ . This special key can be accessed on long press of ్

3. Other rarely used characters available on long press of corresponding base characters.

In no way this article is complete. But this is an attempt to show how some hidden gems of the keyboard layout can be accessed. Suggestions, Corrections and Improvements are welcome !!
