The Importance of Training Departments (L&D)
A training/L&D department is one of the most important components of any business regardless of its size. Of course, mid-size businesses and large enterprises can benefit the most from it. The main objectives of every Learning and Development/Training department is to support learning and training in their broadest sense, to improve effectiveness and inspiration/motivation with the help of learning and training activities and systematically develop the skills, knowledge and practical experience of personnel. All these activities have proven to be very helpful for the progress of every organization. Yet, it turns out that Training Departments (L&D) are some of the first departments to go whenever organization cuts are necessary.
Companies that take cuts and layoffs into consideration want to save a failing organization or they just want to make it more profitable. However, what many managers and business owners don’t know is that these cuts can be costly and this is especially true when it comes to Training Department (L&D) cuts. It seems that there is a trend among large global organizations to dispose of these staff members. This is not a surprise because around 40% of businesses don’t have a global strategy for learning. (1) They are trying to justify their decisions by labeling this department as unnecessary and as some sort of extra that the organization doesn’t really need. This might sound like a logical move, but the truth is that there are many negative consequences in the future.
Why are training departments (L&D) so important?
First of all, when these organizations cut the department, they soon realize how difficult it is to restructure the organization and re-train individuals for technical, administration, management and leadership roles. On top of that, those who will stay in the organization find themselves with additional workload or are unable to handle the new responsibilities they’ve received. All these things are happening because there are sometimes a lessened, or no training department present in the organization. In other words, the training department has a direct impact on the productivity of your organization.
The training department is here to give a chance to all employees to extend their knowledge. This is the reason why employers should not look at this department as some sort of unnecessary expense. This is an investment that can pay off in the long run. Surely, there is some cost involved and employees may have to miss out some of their work time while they are training, but these drawbacks are minor compared to the advantages of having a department like this. If you are a business owner, and you are still not sure why creating or keeping a training department (L&D) in your organization is a good idea, keep reading because we will display some of the best reasons to do this in the next post.
