This tutorial will provide stepwise instructions on downloading and pre-processing a Sentinel-1 image in SeNtinel Application Platform (SNAP). If you wish to refresh your theoretical knowledge on the basics of SAR remote sensing, you can refer Part1, Part2 and Part3 of my series.

Downloading and installing SNAP: SNAP provides a common architecture for all Sentinel toolboxes. It is an open source software and is freely downloadable. Moreover, the graphical user interface (GUI) of SNAP tool is straight forward and easy to use. Download SNAP from here and follow the instructions to install it. I have highlighted the installer that I have downloaded in Table 4.1. Choose according to your PC requirements. Sentinel Toolbox installer is what we need for this exercise.

Sentinel-1 data search and acquisition: Sentinel data products are made available free of charge to all data users. Sentinel-1 carries a C-band SAR instrument (Wavelength: 7.5–3.8 cm) in single polarization (VV or HH) and dual polarization (VV+VH or HH+HV) modes. Sentinel-1 operates in 4 acquisition modes: Stripmap (SM), Interferometric Wide Swath (IW), Extra-Wide Swath (EW) and Wave Mode (WV). Each mode can produce products at Level-0, Level-1 SLC, Level-1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) and Level-2 Ocean (OCN). For information on…
