Pearl Millet, called Bajra in India, is the most widely grown ancient grain. India is the largest producer of pearl millet and began cultivating it between 1500 and 1100 BCE, i.e., more than 3000 years ago.

Pearl millet can grow in drought areas, soil with low fertility, low moisture, and high temperature, and it performs well in acidic soils. Due to its tolerance to difficult growing conditions, it can be grown in areas where other cereal crops, such as wheat or maize, would not survive. Pearl millet is an annual summer crop well-suited for double cropping and rotations or grown as an intercrop maximizing productivity.
