Agricultural yields have grown every year for decades. There is enough food for everyone, but it is unevenly distributed. The country with the highest number of people starving is India, which at the same time has the highest number of people suffering from severe obesity. https://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2011/09/26/economics-journal-indias-double-burden-of-malnutrition-and-obesity/

That should give you an idea.

If you think that the solution lies in the past, think again. 200 years ago, average life expectancy was 35 years. We dont want to go back.

We want to go forward using the technology we have, Then it is up to politicians to see that everyone is fed. Where we are failing, like in South Sudan, Yemen and India, it is because of population growth (Yemen having tripled its population since 1975 as a good example), conflict and bad politicians.

If we have world peak population around 2050 as is predicted, at 10–11 billion, we can probably pass the bump with everyone onboard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projections_of_population_growth

But the margins will be getting smaller, and there are external events such as major volcanic activity like Laki 1783 or Tambora 1815 that could lead to global mass starvation. We are not prepared for that. https://www.wired.com/2013/06/local-and-global-impacts-1793-laki-eruption-iceland/
