Technology and Writing

Technology has changed the way we write in several ways. No longer do we need to rely on our handwriting alone. We have phones that serve as small computers, allowing us to type, brose the internet, and take pictures. Laptops can give us both portability and power similar to a desktop. Word possessors imbedded with spell check help all spelling levels write.
Technology has altered how we understand writing, what is traditionally hand done becomes symbols on a screen. A pen become keys on a keyboard. Paper is now a black digital canvas on which our cursor navigates. Writing becomes visual in nature, less physical than it once was. This can make writing more approachable for many, including those who find handwriting uncomfortable.
With technology, books go into a digital format. Animations can enhance a child’s book, links can be embedded into adult books for easy reference. We can highlight words, search for phrases, and more. The book becomes an interactive medium for the consumer to explore. With technology, books go from computer screen to device, and sometimes they are translated into movies. These movies serve as a way to visually bring the book to life and to further market the book. Movie goers, who also read, will likely wish to compare the book to the movie.
Our literary culture, combined with technology, allows for books to become portable. We can bring a whole library with us on a device. Our collections become pocket sized, we never have to worry about not having a book with us. Technology has expanded our reading, it makes it easier for anyone to read.
