Self care has become a common term in recent years, and that’s for good reason. Taking the time to take care of yourself, especially in this fast-paced world, is important to balancing your health and wellness with the everyday stress of life.

And while it may sound simple in theory, self care is often overlooked and can be challenging to keep consistent. To make it a bit easier, we’ve made this self care assessment guide. It will help you analyze how well you’re attending to your personal self care needs, spot any less helpful patterns, and use this knowledge to improve your self care practice.

How to use the self care assessment guide

With this tool, you’ll use a rating system to measure the quality and frequency of many of your different self care practices. You’ll do this for both physical and psychological care, so you can get a holistic view of your self care practices.

Here are the ratings you’ll use:

1. I do this poorly/ I do this rarely or not at all

2. I do this ok/ I do this sometimes

3. I do this well/ I do this often

4. I would like to improve at this/ I would like to do this more often

In each of these categories, you’ll consider activities that you currently engage in, or that you plan on engaging in. Think about how well you do each of these activities, and how often you do them, and assign a rating to each activity.

Some examples of physical self care include:

· Intentionally choosing to eat filling, nourishing foods

· Taking time to exercise in a way that feels good

· Taking care of personal hygiene

· Dressing in a way that makes you feel good about yourself

· Giving yourself rest when sick or tired

Psychological self care can be a bit more difficult. Some examples of psychological self care activities include:

· Taking time for self reflection and journaling

· Recognizing and working with your strengths

· Eliminating distractions

· Spending time with loved ones

· Meditating

· Spending time in nature

· Engaging in faith-based activities, or other such meaningful activities

· Participating in professional or personal development

· Maintaining an organized, clean, and comfortable work space

· Engaging in activities that make you feel good, and that aren’t harmful to you

There are dozens, possibly hundreds, of other activities that could fall under physical and psychological self care. These are just a few of the options, and which ones apply to you will depend on your wants, needs, and lifestyle.

With self care, one of the most important things to remember is to be gentle and forgiving with yourself. If you aren’t doing as well as you would like, or if you haven’t met your goals, that’s ok. Go easy with yourself, and work towards your goals in a way that makes sense to you. A life coach can work with you towards these personal goals.

How to develop sustainable self care practices

Self care is an ongoing practice, one that can take time to set up and effort to maintain. But there is some advice if you’re looking to sustain good self care. Here are a few tips:

· Stick to the basics at first. While you find your rhythm and develop a routine, stick to activities that are simple and easy to complete.

· Be aware of which activities actually help you. Avoid those that don’t.

· Create a “no” list. Sometimes, you need to focus on cutting out things that aren’t good for you or your mental health.

· Consider the importance of your habits. Certain things, like sleep, eating, and exercise, can be very important for your overall health.

· Take care of yourself. Throughout whatever you do, remember to focus on yourself, and only do what is consistent with healthy goals.
