Becoming a product manager is a dream I’ve been passionately pursuing. In my previous blog, I shared my aspirations and the initial steps I took to achieve this goal.

While I was in the pursuit of becoming a product manager one day, I came across Google’s project management apprenticeship program which stood out as an excellent initial opportunity to kickstart my journey in this exciting field.

Google’s Apprenticeship Program

Google’s apprenticeships encompass various domains, including digital marketing, data analytics, and information technology. This diversity enables candidates to explore their passions and find their perfect fit within the tech giant.

The Google Project Management Apprenticeship Program is a unique work-and-study opportunity offered by Google in collaboration with CAIT Edusys. Spanning 24 months, this program allows apprentices to gain hands-on experience while also receiving technical instruction to enhance their skills.

The journey begins with a boot camp, preparing apprentices for their roles at Google.

Project management apprentices spend 80% of their time learning on the job at Google and the remaining 20% is dedicated to technical instruction, facilitated by CAIT Edusys.

The application process is thorough but designed to identify the best candidates for the program.

Submitting an application

Aspiring applicants must apply through the Google Careers page when the relevant job role becomes available.A resume and cover letter must be included to showcase their potential.

Tips to standout

Make sure your resume resonates with the requirements of the project management domain, showcasing skills and experiences that align with the program.

However, authenticity is key — never embellish your qualifications or overstate your expertise in areas where you’re not a true master. While tailoring your cover letter, take the opportunity to explain not only your professional journey but also why you’re specifically drawn to the Project Management Apprenticeship Program.

Address why you believe you’re an excellent fit and how your unique perspective can enrich the Google community.

Online Assessment

Shortlisted candidates face an online assessment featuring logical reasoning and problem-solving questions in a multiple-choice format.

This step is essential in identifying individuals with critical thinking skills.

Tips to ace the assessment

Strengthen your logical reasoning skills by practicing aptitude questions. Seek out resources that offer a range of problems, from analytical puzzles to mathematical series.

Familiarize yourself with comprehension exercises that evaluate your understanding and interpretation of written content. Reading articles, news pieces, and academic texts can help refine your comprehension skills and improve your ability to extract essential information. Exploring CAT papers can provide you with exposure to a variety of question formats and complexity levels.

As the assessment is timed, create a conducive environment for practice by setting strict time limits.

Phone Interview with CAIT Edusys

Successful online assessment candidates proceed to a phone interview with a recruiter from CAIT Edusys.

This interview assesses the candidate’s career interests, English communication, understanding of the apprenticeship program, as well as self-motivation and teamwork skills.

Virtual Interviews with Googlers

The next phase involves two virtual interviews with Google employees.

These interviews evaluate the candidate’s interest in project management and technology, communication skills, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities.

Tips for interviews

The classic ‘Tell me about yourself’ opening question sets the tone for the interview.

Prepare a concise response to highlight your passion for project management will demonstrate your alignment with the program’s objectives. Every question you encounter during the interview is an opportunity to underscore your project management acumen. Frame your answers in the context of project management principles and challenges. When faced with a question, take a deliberate moment to gather your thoughts. Compose your response mentally before speaking.

Mock interviews can be incredibly beneficial as they help you to simulate the interview experience.

Team matching:

After the positive virtual interviews, candidates enter the competitive phase, where they are matched with the right team based on their skills and availability, followed by receiving the offer letter.

This personalized approach ensures a rewarding and impactful learning experience within the Google Project Management Apprenticeship Program.

Tips

At this point of time, you can just relax. While you hope for the best outcome, also keep your focus on personal and professional growth.

Making a Difficult Decision:

Although I was thrilled throughout the hiring process and eagerly anticipated working with Google, I eventually chose to decline the offer. Several personal reasons influenced my decision, such as the unavailability of my preferred location and a salary package that didn’t meet my expectations.

If you’re considering embarking on this apprenticeship journey, here are some vital factors to contemplate:

  1. Vibrant Work Culture: Google is renowned for its healthy and supportive work environment, where you’ll collaborate with brilliant minds.
  2. Valuable Experience: The perks and benefits of working with a global brand like Google are immeasurable and can significantly impact your future.
  3. Balance Expectations: Graduates from tier-1 colleges may receive more lucrative offers, and Google’s apprenticeship might not look very attractive.
  4. Fixed Location and Salary: While you can express your location preferences, remember that the final allocation of location and salary is non-negotiable.
  5. Graduating into New Opportunities: Upon completing the program, Google doesn’t guarantee employment, but it does provide assistance in securing a job elsewhere.

The content I’ve shared here reflects the current hiring process and benefits offered by Google, but it’s essential to keep in mind that these aspects may undergo changes in the future. However, this experience can serve as motivation and provide valuable insights into how to assess the pros and cons of similar opportunities.
