Are you friends with everyone who live on your street?

Nah, I didn’t think so.

If everyone was your friend, then you would have no friend. There’s a big lesson here that many individuals as well as businesses make.

As you write, speak, or create content, there has to be a clear image in your mind about who is on the receiving end. It is often advised that you picture that person as a friend.

Once again, consider this question: Are you friends with everyone? If you’re not, then do not try to please everyone with your content.

How Do You Identify Your Target Audience?

There are a few defining characteristics that can help you paint a clearer picture of who your content is addressing:

1. You understand their pain points.

When the stories you use are things your audience can easily relate to because they have gone through or are going through them, then you know you have found your audience

2. They are a unique set of individuals.

A topic like, “The Importance Of Self-Discipline” might as well be addressing the entire world population. But when your title goes, “How Self-Discipline Helped Me Overcome My Addiction To Substance Abuse”, you cast the net a bit tighter.

3. They are asking for solutions.

You can’t sell car maintenance to an auto mechanic. A soldier would probably smile if you try to teach him self-defense lessons.

You want to consider whether your audience actually wants your content. If they don’t, you need to pack up and go where your audience is.

Conclusion

You might think you have the greatest content in the world, but if you cannot find people who appreciate the value in it, then what’s the point?

This is what you get with the wrong audience:

the face of the wrong audience
The face you get when you speak to the wrong audience

And this is what you get with the right audience:

A standing ovation from the right audience
A standing ovation from the right audience!

So what do you think? Let me know in the comments!
