Sounds coming out from a light switch like snapping, popping or cracking are not a good sign. When a light makes crackling sound or a loud pop from a switch, it indicates that something is seriously wrong. This could be the time for the switch replacement.

Go through this article to learn what to do when a light switch makes crackling or popping sound.

How Does a Light Switch Work?

The lights and other devices get power from continuous workflow of current. There are two terminals in a light switch. When the toggle is in the ‘on’ position, the power supply wire or the black wire connects those two terminals. It allows electricity flow to the light. When the light is turned off it interrupts the electricity flow. When the switch toggle is turned off there is no connection between the terminals and flow is interrupted.

Why Crackling Sound Comes While Turning on a Switch?

The electricity flow generates heat but the heat is contained in the insulated wires. If the electricity escapes through the wiring, it generates heat to build up faster followed by a fire hazard. Faulty connections in an electrical circuit cause arcing when the current tries to jump the gaps.

Light switches have multiple uses therefore some of its functions may stop working with time. If the switch loses its connections between two terminals when the light is on, the power flow becomes intermittent. At that time the current arcs and it creates a hissing or popping sound. If you hear such sound coming from any of your light, it is the time to call an electrician.

Know the Cause

If the screw terminals that connect the circuit wires with the body are loose, a switch may start making sound. The sound is an indication that electrical current is jumping a gap that lies between metal connections and do not have a firm contact. You must turn off the power supply to the switch and then uncover the plate on the switch. This way you can examine the screw terminals to make sure if they are working in a good condition and well secured with the circuit wires. You may have to lose the mounted screws on the switch and pull it forward that means outside of the box.

Now you can see if the wire connections are secured or the switch is making noise once you have tightened the screw terminals. If you are a layman, it is better to avoid doing it on your own. You need to call a professional electrician. It will lessen your risks of a fire hazard. Reach Prolectric for an electrician in OKC.
