Brewing Process

Have you ever wondered how your favorite beer is made? The brewing process is pretty fascinating, and it all starts with 4 basic ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast.

Water is the major ingredient so it is important that it is of high quality. Brewery companies use various methods to make sure that their water is pure.

Malt is the next ingredient, and it provides the sugars that the yeast will convert to alcohol. Hops will make the beer bitter and aromatic.

Yeast is the final ingredient and it is responsible for fermentation. The type of yeast used will determine the type of beer that is produced.

Step-by-step Process

Now that we’ve discussed the basics, let’s take a more in-depth look at the brewing process.

· Milling

The first step is to mill the malt. This process starts by crushing the malt in order to release the starches and enzymes that are inside.

· Mashing

Next, the malt is mixed with water and heated. This step is called mashing, and it is important because it activates the enzymes that will convert the starches to sugars.

· Lautering

After the mashing process, the sweet liquid left behind is called wort. The wort is then transferred to a boiling vessel where hops are added.

· Boiling

The wort is then transferred to a boiling vessel where hops are added. Beer will be bitter, aromatic, and flavorful when it is made using hops.

· Cooling

Once the boiling is complete the wort is cooled and transferred to a fermentation vessel.

· Fermentation

As soon as yeast is added the fermentation begins. The yeast consumes the sugars in the wort and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide.

· Maturation

After fermentation is complete, the beer is transferred to a conditioning tank where it matures. During this process, the beer may be aged in wooden barrels or bottles.

Finally, the beer is carbonated and packaged.

And that’s it! The next time you enjoy a cold beer remember the lengthy process of making it.

Today Brewing is a large-scale industry. Beer is packaged in metal casks, glass bottles, aluminium cans, and plastic containers in modern breweries that employ stainless steel equipment and computer–controlled automated operations. The production of beers under license in foreign countries has now been extended worldwide.
