City-based green activists on March 22 accelerated NGT challenging DTCP’s Gurgaon Masterplan 2031, which permits construction of real estate developers in Gurgaon over natural drains. The activists asked immediate removal of encroachments, cancellation of licences and change in land use granted as per the master plan.

The enviromentalist have alleged there’s encroachment over Kost/Badshapur nullah passing through khasra number 86 at Gwalpahari in Gurgaon,it is feeder tributaries in catchment areas, and other nullahs in the city.Based on the petition, encroachment on natural drains and permission for real estate development over them violate provisions of the Water (Prevention and control Pollution) Act, mid 1970s, Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and many NGT instructions. At the same time, the activists also raised concern over concreting of Badshapur drain.

It is quite pleasing that, residential projects in Gurgaon have developed at a rocketing pace. However, it now time to take a halt and think about the environment as well. This recent piece of news is very disturbing and the Government should come up with a formula which has equally weight age on the development and conserving the environment.
