“Who you are is what you do between notifications”

This is one of a 50+ long series of tweets of Nicholas Carr’s — he calls these tweets “theses in tweetform”. Each short tweet is a running critique on the impact of technology and the internet on our lives. He covers everything from media platforms like Netflix, to social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. No source on the internet escapes the theses in tweetform.

This tweet suggests that none of us are immune to the pulls of technology and social media, but we are defined by what we do when we are not on social media. It implies that our notifications control us, and take away our character, but nothing can be done about that. Might as well just get used to it and pay attention to the other parts of our lives. His nonchalant attitude is almost as amusing as it is unsettling.

Should we settle in and accept that technology is taking over our lives and relations to others? Maybe it’s just a fact of life now.
