A company has a website that had previously ranked well on Google.com for a number of their business-related keywords, and they received a fair number of new leads each week or month. However, in the last year or two, that seemed to stop. They wondered why and began to call SEO companies to see what may have caused it. They were expecting to hear a list of key factors (important to Google) that may have affected their website performance, but instead, most of the time, they were showered with sales pitches. Well, I will help you skip that annoying part and cut to the chase from a marketing perspective. Let’s get started.

Today, if your business information is not registered with Google (the #1 search engine in the world), customers won’t be able to find you, or even worse, won’t even know that your business exists. To address this, here is how to register your business with Google:
- Create a Gmail account for your business.
- Create a Google+ account for your business and fill out your business information.
- Verify your business listing with Google.
Content and Links
Yes, recently Google acknowledged its top two ranking factors for websites, which are Content and Links. “Content” is the information on your website in a variety of formats such as text, video, audio, infographic, etc. And “Links” are the backlinks you get from other websites and social sites pointing back to your content because they find your content interesting and beneficial. This also includes the out-going links you give to other websites and internal links you give to another web page on your website, which have helpful information for your site’s visitors.
Although Google didn’t say whether Content or Links is number #1 in importance, I personally think Content should be #1 and Links #2 because good content should naturally generate backlinks, while it’s less likely the other way around. So, to score points on these two fronts with Google and website visitors, you need to strive to understand your customer at a deeper level and strategically position the type of content (on your website and on those of others) that will attract your preferred customers. Google Business Reviews = Trust Factor
Most likely you have heard of Google Reviews, but do you know that recently Google just added a new feature to its Google Reviews display which has brought about a new standard? In the past, when a business received a bad review from a customer, they just asked a few happy customers to post good reviews to “bury” the previous bad review(s). Then, when new customers read the reviews about that business, they would see the good reviews first. But now, Google has changed how that works. It now randomly picks a few of your Google reviews to display instead of displaying the most recent reviews first, (see an example below).
That means, if you wish to build a good business reputation on the web, as well as gain and maintain customers, you should pay close attention to the voices of your customers online, especially on Google Reviews. You may need to revisit your customer service approach to make sure you don’t overlook something that might be very important to your customers. You can do a quick survey with your existing customers to find out. It is much better to find out what needs improvement from a survey of your current customers than to find their criticism on Google Reviews. By then, it will have cost you much more in terms of time, effort and opportunities.
Overall, these are the common factors that will affect your website performance on search engines and the internet, not just on Google.com.
