The model, known internally as Project Q*, could represent a major breakthrough in the company’s pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) — a highly autonomous branch of AI superintelligence capable of cumulative learning and outperforming humans in most tasks. And you were worried about ChatGPT taking all our jobs?

I recently stumbled upon some intriguing reports circulating about OpenAI, suggesting a significant breakthrough in the realm of artificial intelligence that has stirred quite a buzz among the staff.

What is Project Q* AGI?

Project Q* — pronounced ‘Q-Star’ — refers to a new AI model being developed by AI powerhouse and ChatGPT owner OpenAI.

According to some sources, Q* could represent a significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence by dramatically increasing AI thinking and bringing the corporation closer to a big breakthrough in the creation of AGI.

What is an AGI?

Unlike current generative AI models, which are able to create responses based on information it’s previously learnt, AGI is an autonomous system that can apply reason to decisions, granting it human-level problem solving capabilities.

While AGI is still yet to be fully realized, many experts believe the technology will also be capable of cumulative learning, another trait of human cognition that could give it the power to improve upon itself exponentially.

Is Q* Reliable?

Several sources claim that Q*’s has been able to demonstrate these attributes when solving mathematical problems. Thanks to the model’s vast computing power, Q* was able to outperform grade-school students, implying that it’s reasoning skills and cognitive capabilities supersede the functions of current AI technology.

Q* owes its name to the fusion of q-learning and A* algorithms, believed to be the linchpins in achieving this remarkable feat. While AI models like ChatGPT and GPT-4 can dabble in mathematics, they often falter in reliability.

According to Wenda Li, an AI lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, our current algorithmic arsenal lacks the finesse required to reliably solve mathematical conundrums using AI. Deep learning and transformers, the bedrock of language models, excel in pattern recognition but fall short when it comes to genuine understanding and reasoning, Li contends.

Indeed, the ability to grapple with mathematics is a litmus test for true AI prowess, as it demands not just pattern recognition but genuine comprehension. Theoretical speculations suggest that an AI proficient in mathematics could potentially extend its capabilities to diverse domains like coding or even drawing insights from textual data.

The buzz surrounding Q* is reminiscent of previous AGI hype cycles, such as Google DeepMind’s Gato, which was praised for its versatility in gaming, image captioning, and robotic manipulation. However, such fervor frequently obscures the reality of incremental progress, portraying each breakthrough as a watershed moment in the quest for AGI.

Nevertheless, the prospect of an AI proficient in solving mathematical equations is undeniably tantalizing. A deeper understanding of mathematics could pave the way for groundbreaking applications in scientific research and engineering.
