The right foundation of governance is obviously one thing. I don’t want to sound pessimistic, but if we would start with the kind of communitarian society you’re talking about without post scarcity sustainability wouldn’t it dial back itself to kind of orwelian type of caricature? There are few reasons to belive that it will happen eventually. Not every brain reacts the same while being exposed to such systems -- to put it in simplistic terms just for the lenght of this response sake -- some like to see the world burn, some like to indulge only in pleasures, some cannot contain their hormone induced urges and some think that safety comes only from acummulating more than others. What I mean by that is: without actual post scarcity era I don’t see communitarian or any socialistic type of communiy lasting with its core innocency unchanged. We should ask ourselves first and foremost if we have in fact the right foundations for creating a whole new civilistation. If not, I’m afraid, the Martian colony would end up as a sad and shortlived experiment just as you said while mentioning Elysium (and elysium was a kind of post scarcity society).
