4HL — The Four Hour Life. If you work 8 hours. Sleep 8 hours. Commute/dinner/family time for a bit that is 4 hours and so then you have around 4 hours left in your day to yourself. The hours that belong to you. Roughly.

4HLer — The salary man, employee, wage earner or company man. No equity or upside from a sale. Not the owner. No payoff.

Consistency Space — The space that the 4HLer lives in. This is roughly 80–90 percent of society. This is its own domain with its own characteristics that it does not share with the other Payoff Space domain.

  • type of stress (Payoff stress vs consistency stress)
  • Behavior dictated by downside at the workplace
  • Behavior manipulated due to hierarchy
  • flattening of natural volatility
  • constraints on freedom
  • The “pull” of the weekend (temporary freedom)
  • Different types of exhaustion
  • Clustering with other 4HLers
  • Coping with consistency space. How does it effect the rest of your life, what you consume, what you do after work or before work? How does it effect your relationships? (two people working as well)
  • Lowered Total Fertility Rate in contemporary society with scaled up consistency space members
  • How does consistency space affect males and females differently? What are the side effects on the personal level? What are the side effects when you scale up employment to each gender? Are we seeing different reactions to consistency space?
  • The Turkey problem
  • The requirement of needing a “narrative”
  • dosing these variables over time (one cigarette vs 30 years of smoking)
  • reducing randomness from the environment
  • What does always having to be consistent mean?
  • Construct of time on your life
  • Is the human made to be consistent?
  • Many, many other effects

Payoff Space — The other domain. Which includes the self employed, owners. Anyone who works for a payoff. roughly 10 percent of the population is in this space. Relationships and dating are in Payoff Space. You can go on a hundred dates and nothing happens. Then one date ends up being the woman you spend the next 20 years with.

Some attributes of this space:

  • The “pull” of the payoff
  • The lack of hierarchy
  • The lack of day to day downside
  • Different type of stress (one off vs constant)
  • Freedom
  • Transactional
  • Potential for Honesty
  • Gait and posture changes
  • No narrative necessary
  • No clustering
  • Many, Many more.

12-Hour Life — these are mostly self employed. Instead of 4 hours in a day you have 12 hours to yourself. Your work is mostly meant to be consumed by 4HLers. Academics are not in the 4HL. They have no downside (tenure) and play all day. They are in modified payoff space (release a book). But they live a 12HL.
