Advent 2015: Day 5 — “The Giving God…Riches”
“Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day” — Deuteronomy 18:17–18
S o far this week, we’ve focused on God’s character and why He sent Jesus….to save us from our sins. Today, I want us to think about “why”?
In our text above, God warns His people about the dangers of blessings. You could also say, that He warns us about the dangers of our heart attitude towards His blessings. It’s not that the blessings are dangerous, but it’s our heart that makes them dangerous. So, in that sense, God knew His people! And His people were prone to take His blessings and through our fallen view, allow His blessings to be corrupted. Maybe one of the places we see this most clearly is in our relationship with “riches”. This is especially true THIS time of the year….when a corrupt and fallen world wants to increase their bottom line by getting us to believe that we need what their selling! So maybe this thought is a pretty good “Advent” thought after all?
I mean, let’s think about it. One of the real issues we have is that we get our attention off of the “Giving God” who gives us true riches….and we begin to focus on what those blessings can do for…. “ME”. So maybe this is why we NEED Advent! Because Advent reminds us that our Giving God doesn’t give so we can be Narcissistic and feed our self-indulgent flesh, but He gives to save us from our Narcissistic flesh! AND, He gives, so that we can participate in what HE does!
And THEN in this text, God mentions His “covenant”. His covenant was His promise to His people. Maybe the reason God connects His covenant promises with “riches” is because He wanted His people to know that He was a lavishly giving God!
He was a God who promised to provide for His children. He was a God that no matter what your tax bracket, He would give you what you needed to be in relationship with Him and to be blessed IN that relationship!
When Jesus’ first Advent was nearly complete, Jesus made a “New Covenant” (Luke 22:20) with us! And the riches of THIS promise was the greatest and most needed provision of all of us….
“forgiveness of sins”.
The Advent of Jesus, reminds us that we have a Heavenly Father Who is a lavish Giver…of all good gifts! In fact, when we understand God through the lens of Jesus, we see that God gives us “all things pertaining to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). AND we see that God gives not just at this time of the year…but every moment of our life! Hope FULLy, that does something to us! Hopefully it tames our wild desires and humbles us with gratitude and contentment and focuses us to see that ALL God gives is to be enjoyed and used for HIS glory and for the blessing of others! WHEN that’s our heart toward it…we will be blessed…beyond belief!
May that be yours today, this season and always!
