If you own a cat or have been around one you will know that cats do whatever the heck they want. Trying to teach them not to scratch the couch seems impossible. Maybe it is.
It is not that they don’t listen or can’t distinguish your (the owner’s) voice, because they do. They simply do not care enough to react.
On the other hand, dogs don’t seem to have a problem with listening and following orders. They happily walk beside you, sit down and stay if you want them to — with a little bit of training.
It made me…
Yesterday, during my swim, ‘drops’ fell from the sky, landing right in front of me. Seconds later I heard a seagull scream. Adding the two left me with: I almost got shit on by a bird.
The rest of my swim was rather uneventful, giving me room to wonder. Was it pee or poop that nearly hit my head? Why was it partly white? If the white liquidy stuff was poop, what does bird pee look like? Do they even pee? I didn’t know. Do you?
Fast-forward to some Google searches later and I can tell you all the fine…
It’s 8:09 and I just made it into the lab, the sun is rising. It looks absolutely stunning, especially the reflection of the golden light on the glassware. However, don’t be mistaken by the peaceful image. The machines in the room are making so much noise it is as if you are standing directly next to a busy highway.
Usually, people never understand when I say ‘I am in the lab’, except for other scientists that work in the same field. Most people simply don’t have a clue what’s going on. It is a whole different world out there. So…
While I am a thriving healthy twenty-something year old with no intention of dying anytime soon, I do wonder. How do I want to be buried or would I rather want to be cremated? Are there any other options?
I happen to be a very conscious person with regards to sustainability. And, I try to do the best I can with whatever is within my control. Ultimately, it brought me to wonder about the following question:
How does one leave the earth in a ‘sustainable’ way?
Let me take you with me on my journey and thought process to finding…
A highly effective long-term reversible contraception. An intrauterine device (IUD). The dream, right?
In my surroundings, I notice that people don’t know the method is a possibility for them and if they do most are afraid of it. Many do want to stop using the pill but are scared of an IUD.
I think that is unfair, so I am here to tell my story. My experience with the…
For 6 million years Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), a Pacific salmon species, have migrated from the sea to freshwaters to spawn. After they lay their eggs they die, this is normal.
However, for the last decades, it has been observed that the salmon are dying before they can spawn, so-called pre-spawn mortality. Normally this is around 1%, currently, in some areas, it is seen to be as high as 90%. Obviously, this is a problem for the existence of the Coho salmon.
The species are important for various reasons — economically, culturally and ecologically. …
Sometimes my fingers have their own minds and press different keys than I intend to. So, one time when typing away, in the Medium Editor, this box on the bottom of the page popped up.
Chock full with keyboard shortcuts — a cheat sheet. Who would have known? Well, I am going to spill the beans and tell the world about it.
The box, full of keyboard shortcuts will pop up with:
Ctrl + ?. If you are in the Medium Editor. To remove it repeat or click the cross (top right of the ‘cheat’ box).
Another way to get…
The 66th volume of the journal Clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecology was all about contraception. It featured the latest research and developments regarding modern contraception methods. Hence, it also discussed the recent improvements in male contraception. Or better said the lack there-off, at least on a market level.
It has been 80 years since the female contraceptive hormonal pills have been approved by the FDA. Since then they have developed significantly, improving efficiency and their usage. Currently, there is a whole spectrum of hormonal contraceptives with a variety of administration methods, from the levonorgestrel IUDs (intrauterine device) to monthly injectables. Apart…
Guust loves avocado. Well, to be honest, I don’t know whether he truly loves it as he has yet to learn how to speak. Nonetheless, he seems to enjoy it a lot.
Guust is a cat you see. He is a three-year-old, male cat, who eats avocado. My mom thinks it is adorable. I find it weird. It raised all sorts of questions in my mind.
Is it normal for a cat to eat avocado? Why does he like it? Is it safe?
I am a firm believer that there is a reason for everything. Hence, I set out to…
An apple pie can tick off most of the adjectives for a delicious pie, sweet, fresh, warm, rich in flavour, etc. It is the reason that in our family apple pies are indispensable. Whatever the family occasion, there is always a freshly baked apple pie filling the room with heavenly smells.
Either with a dash of powdered sugar, whipped (plant-based) cream or vanilla sauce (Swedish style) it is demolished by every family member. I guess we all support the following statement:
Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness. — Jane Austen
