First Impression is The Best Impression
And the good news is that Impression can be created !
A situation or an event when a person encounters another person for the first time and thereby a mental image is formed of that person, is what we call The First Impression. You’ve heard it said, that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.Have you ever wondered, why this thing is given so much of importance? Well, the fact is that when you first meet a person, he makes a judgement about you in approximately five seconds of your meeting. His judgement is confirmed by the end of thirty seconds where he has already gauged your appearance, body language and communication skills. When you meet someone for the first time, they are taking a rapid inventory of your gait, your smile, your handshake, and how you present yourself. In a survey of the members of the American Personnel Consultants¾ those men and women who are responsible for hiring people for large companies¾members generally agreed that they made their decision to hire or not to hire a person within 30 seconds of the first meeting. Coming back to the same question, WHY are we at all suppose to create this so called Good First impression? The need to relate and be accepted by all is one of the fundamental human needs. We need to create a positive impression in various vital situations like an interview, client meetings, presentations and all those situations where you feel the need to impress.
So here you are with few tips which can master you to create an image that will lead you not only to be impressive but admirable too :
Suit up for Success
A professional appearance will enhance your personal brand. The more “put together” you appear, the more likely you will leave a positive impression. You don’t have to purchase expensive designer suits to look your best. Just dress correctly, as per your body type, structure, complexion and the most important, a style that you can carry comfortably.
Give a firm Handshake with a Smile
Your handshake should be warm, friendly and sincere. If it is too firm or too weak, you may convey a negative impression. If you’re seated when you’re introduced to someone, stand before you shake his or her hand — it shows respect for yourself and the person you’re meeting. Remember to keep it short and sweet.
Exhibit a positive body language
Body language is a crucial part of first impressions. Everything from your posture to how you carry yourself to the way you’re angling your body. Often, simply being aware of your body language can result in immediate improvements. Another way to examine your body language is to look at yourself on a video walking around a room. Subconscious cues to keep in mind include noticing where you point your feet, the position of your shoulders, and the way you shake hands.
Attentive listening builds trust. Throughout your meeting, ask pertinent questions. When someone else speaks, make eye contact and show you’re fully engaged in what he is saying. Always allow others time to fully express themselves. If you interrupt or attempt to finish someone’s sentence, he may assume you’re in a hurry or feel you don’t respect his opinion. Effective listening skills will help you establish rapport with new clients and business partners.
Be interested and interesting
If you are truly interested in meeting people and are open to learning about who they are, they will get this in a first impression. We have all had the experience of meeting someone and knowing instantly that they were dragged here by a friend and are just waiting to get out the door and head home. When you are meeting people for the first time approach others with a genuine interest in who they are. This is often contagious and you will have better conversations and lasting connections when you are interested because they become interested.
So, now that you know how to create an impressive image and a polished start, Get Set and conquer the world. Best Of Luck!!! :)
