Hi Ahmad, thank you for taking the time to read my article and write your thought. As I have stated in my review, I decided to choose the listing because the host had positive reviews (apart from budget constraints and consideration on location), so I felt pretty safe to begin with. Besides, I was not too concerned because Airbnb has a clear mechanism to report a host should anything unpleasant happens, so that safety net reassured me as well. Moreover, I believe that the problematic situation in my home country should not stop me from going places and befriending new people, given the possibility of pleasant cross-cultural encounters. It is important to note that while safety must come first when one is travelling, it is not primarily about avoiding the opposite sex. The possibilities of sexual violence to happen, unfortunately, do not necessarily correspond to gender — a simple Google search would show you that there are incidents of sexual assaults happen to men and boys as well as other sexual minority groups. Should one wants to opt for sharing space while they travel, it is of utmost importance to stay safe, despite the gender of the people they are sharing the space with. Your concerns remind me of the fact that many of us still think in gender binaries when addressing safety issues, as if only men can be perpetrators and women are more prone to be victim, and it is important for us to acknowledge that there is more to that, so thank you.
