Esperanza Spalding’s “Good Lava”

Emily’s D+Evolution 2016

Track Review

Jazz and fierce rock melt together to create chaotic wander in Esperanza Spalding’s track “Good Lava” from her new album Emily’s D+Evolution. Comparing her skills to flowing lava, Esperanza emits sensualism and playful desire. The video utilizes steam-punk mechanics to turn statues of the gods into music, purifying the material world of their tarnish. Lava, like Esperanza, has the ability to move mountains. She hints at rejecting mechanical ways for the natural power of lava. The video displays vibrant colors in kaleidoscope meltdowns. Different statues signify diverse culture. Images of Buddha, the Greek Muses, and Shiva — among many western philosophers and theologians — ride a conveyor belt into destruction. Spalding blends philosophy with music as well as she is able to make jazz love rock ballads. In that the cultures are combined and transformed into harmony, the individual desire of society is to unite — Spalding illustrates the beauty that comes from chaos.
