Flexibility will come by default with ‘Asanas’. However, it will be relative. You will see improvement for sure, though may not become an Olympic Gymnast. Otherwise, India would have been taking all the medals in Olympics, since this is the oldest place where Asanas have been practiced by men, women & children. :)

Further the question here is not of hype/distraction. You have to understand the procedure.

As per the Patanjali Yogasutra — the law of Yoga - (Check Wikipedia) — there are 8 steps to the entire science. ‘Asana’ is the third level of science.

Hence this is like making a dish… say cake… you beat the eggs… mix it with flour, etc… put the mixture in oven… the oven must be pre-heated… then bake for a specific period… then you have the cake. If you mess one thing in between, you get nothing. Same is with the science of Yoga.

Asanas are merely a step towards a much bigger goal. In themselves they may seem like any other exercise, yet they are in truth part of a much bigger package. You may check this quick slideshow… it will give you some more clarity…

Nice question Anna Lännström, Ph.D. (Anna). Thank you for asking. :)
