This goes straight into that list of “great blogs about leadership”!
Just to add 2p, I will report what I commented to Terence. The issue with tech roles is that sooner or later we all meet that special project that senior management doesn’t like. Regardless of our powers and ability to influence, we will find a situation in which we won’t be able, not because of our faults, to successfully argue for some positive change or transformation project. So we often realise that going “up the ladder” is sadly the only way to get things done.
Of course, there is an option to just give up and move sideways, but sometimes our tastes, passion, commitment to an institution, or whatever will put us on that managerial path.
