After moving to Costa Rica, we were thrilled to find ourselves surrounded by lush greenery, including seven or eight banana trees. However, we soon realized that we wanted more. As we delved into research, we found that advice on planting banana trees varied greatly, ranging from American novelty growing to cloning and commercial cultivation. Thankfully, we had the opportunity to learn from the locals, who showed us a simple and effective way to grow banana trees. In this blog post, we’ll share our experiences and the wisdom we’ve gained about growing banana trees in Costa Rica.

Firstly, it’s essential to understand that a banana tree is not technically a tree. It’s a perennial herb, and the “trunk” is actually a pseudostem made up of tightly packed leaves. This knowledge is crucial when it comes to planting and caring for banana trees.

One of the most important aspects of growing banana trees is understanding their growth cycle. It takes about a year for a banana tree to produce fruit, after which the mother plant dies. However, before it dies, the plant produces “pups” or “hijos” in Costa Rica, which can be carefully removed and replanted to create new trees.
