What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a sport that is a cross between tennis, table tennis, and badminton which requires 2 or 4 players to hit a small ball (similar to a Wiffle ball) over a net. The sport can be played inside or outside, is a non-contact sport, and was first played in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA.

The court is similar to that of a doubles badminton court and the net is similar to an average tennis net. There is a governing body: the International Federation of Pickleball, despite the sport having no Olympic or Paralympic presence at the moment. In the future, you may see more and more playing the sport as it’s one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.

In the US, there are two major tournaments with the “U.S Pickleball National Championships” and the “U.S Open Pickleball Championships” both running annual competitions. There are also international championships that play the sport despite its popularity being limited to community centers, physical education classes, parks, private health clubs, YMCA facilities, and retirement communities mainly in the United States.

For disabled athletes, Para-pickleball is an option that can be played in a wheelchair and is officially recognized by the United States of America Pickleball Association. The rules are fairly similar in both para-pickleball and pickleball, however, the ball may bounce twice in the former before taking a shot.

The sport is very popular among older adults and children as the ball moves slower than tennis balls.

What Should I Eat Before Pickleball?

Before playing a game of pickleball you should plan a meal in order to get the most energy to be able to play. You should eat a carbohydrate snack roughly 30 minutes to an hour beforehand to give yourself an energy boost. You could also have some dried fruit, a sports drink, or just some bread if you’re in a rush and unable to make a meal before your game.

You should avoid spicy food, high-fiber food, high-fat food, and alcohol before playing pickleball as it could upset your stomach or give you an unpleasant response. You should also avoid eating too much before a game as you would likely feel lethargic.

of course, our biased opinion says that you should just take a few combinations of Puriums Sports pack to get the most out of your Pickleball game.

What Are the Health Benefits of Pickleball?

Pickleball is proven to improve mental health and mood as it improves blood pressure levels, releases endorphins, and makes you feel better. Playing the sport with friends gives you vital social interactions which improve mental health and can make you more confident by exercising and getting in shape.

You’re less likely to get an injury while playing pickleball due to its lack of contact and low-impact nature. Heart attacks, diabetes, strokes, and chronic diseases are less common among pickleball players which is another top health benefit.

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to lose their density and is common among older age groups, especially older women. Pickleball keeps your bones strong and can help treat this condition. Since the game involves movement from your whole body, it improves your flexibility and can reduce the risk of arthritis by keeping your joints moving and flexible.

Is Pickleball a Good Cardio Workout?

While playing the sport, you will burn calories due to the aerobic exercise you’re doing as you’ll burn roughly 40% more calories than you would by walking. It can also improve your balance, agility, stamina, control, and footwork which makes it a favorite among older age groups.

If you’re looking for a more challenging workout, you could play a singles pickleball match against a friend. This would increase the amount of running you would have to do and hence, would increase the amount of cardio you do.
