Smallville, Kansas. Population 45,001, known as the meteor capital of the world. This iconic small town is best known as the childhood home to Clark Kent also known as Superman.
So just where is this fictions town? Well obviously it is in Kansas, right? Well in “All New Collector’s Edition” number C-55 it says Smallville is a “Quiet town nestled in the hills…just inland from the eastern seaboard.” Well I don’t think you can find a single person who would say Kansas is near the east coast.
Let’s turn to The Adventures of Superman Radio show that said superman “grew up on Ehen Kent’s Farm… in Iowa.” Then Amazing World of DC Comics #14 said Smallville was in Maryland in between Metropolis and Gotham City on the Delaware Bay. All of these contradictory statements can make the head spin.
The first time any superman related media said Smallville was in Kansas was the 1978 movie “Superman.” But after that movie and Crisis on Infinite earth, an event in the DC comic universe that simplified all of DC’s history into a more manageable size, Smallvile was constantly in Kansas.
So we return to our original Question with a few modifications: Where is Smallville in Kansas after Crisis? Well in the show “Smallville,” which ran on the CW for 10 seasons the titular town resides in Lowell County, but you can look at a county map of Kansas day and night, you’ll never find Lowell.
So let’s dive into the comics. In the story arc “The Death of Superman” Clarks adopted parents drive from Great Bend’s Airport to Smallville within a day. Unfortunately that is not very much help, because you can drive from Great Bend to anywhere in Kansas with in a day, weather permitting of course.
Superman Family #195 says that interstate 70 runs through or near Smallville. That’s great, that means for all we know Manhattan is Smallville. Action comics almost supports this saying Smallville is 55 miles from Salina and in line with Junction City.
Back to the Smallville TV show, Metropolis is about a 1 hour car ride from Smallville and in the season 4 finale Lois Lane says the coordinates for a dam right outside the town is 38° 52’N, 95°35’W. This location is in the very south east corner of Shawnee County. So that knocks Manhattan out of the race.
Additionally in Smallville Season 11, a comic book continuation of the TV show, the zip code for Smallville is 67524, which is the real life zip code of Chace, KS, a town 25 miles southeast of Great Bend. Also in this Comic the town is described as being “200 miles west of Wichita, and southwest of Dodge City, around the town of Satanta.
Finally in the Miniseries “the Kents” Smallville is described as being one day’s travel by horse from Paola. I’ve done the calculations and have assumed the best, and that means the furthest Smallville can be from Paola is 40 miles.
So where the heck is Smallville? Most of these locations contradict each other. Is it on I-70, Chace, or out near Satanta. The short answer, we’ll probably never know where Smallville is. Although we know where it was, at least for a day in 2013.
Smallville, Kansas. Population 41,889, nicknamed Salt City, a town on the Arkansas River. Back on June 21st, 2013 the City of Hutchison renamed there town Smallville for just one day. It was the day that Superman was inducted into the Kansas Hall of Fame.
