Speedsters in the Bible

The Holy Scripture has its own cast of speedsters. They were not mutants or refugees from distant planets. They didn’t get fast feet from scientific experiments gone awry.

They were real people who were incredibly fast runners. There are three instances of super speedsters in the Bible.

1. Asahel, as fast as a gazelle

Asahel was King David’s nephew and a member of the military. According to the Bible, he was unbelievably fast on his feet.

One day on the battlefield, he made the fateful decision to pursue Abner, an enemy military commander. Abner repeatedly warned Asahel and told him to stop the pursuit. But Asahel refused.

He ran up on Abner and the old commander “thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back.” Asahel was killed instantly.

2. Elijah the prophet

Elijah was a powerful prophet from the town of Tishbe. The land had suffered three years of famine because Elijah prayed for the Lord to withhold rain. Then when Elijah prayed for the rain to return, God answered his prayer again.

Elijah warned King Ahab to get going in his chariot or he’d be caught in the downpour. The king obeyed Elijah and headed home. The prophet also prepared himself to run. Then God gave Elijah special power to run very fast. He ran so swiftly that he beat the horse-drawn chariot.

3. The Gadites

The Gadites were one of the twelve tribes of Israel. They were fierce warriors who pledged their loyalty to David when he was a fugitive in the wilderness. Scripture recounts that they were very fast runners.
