Toastettes Toaster Pastries Should Make a Comeback
Pop Tarts couldn’t touch them
Back in the day, when Saturday morning meant hours of cartoons on only three network channels, there existed the glorious breakfast pastries called Toastettes.
They were thinner and crispier around the edges than Pop Tarts. And instead of frosting, they were sprinkled with a barely there coat of crystallized sugar.
They were toaster pastry perfection. Not too sweet and the pastry wasn’t too thick. They were tender and filled with a thickened fruit concoction that had just the right consistency for the perfect bite and mouthfeel every time. My favorite flavor was strawberry.
Often I didn’t even bother to drop them in the toaster. Oh, how many times did I grab a two pack right out of its rectangular cardboard box and hop that train to Happyville?
They were discontinued in 2002.
But it feels like a lifetime since I’ve cradled one in my hands.
3 Reasons Toastettes were superior to Pop Tarts
#1. Toastettes had a buttery, more flakey crust than Pop Tarts. The pastry was baked until it was an off-white crispy-edged perfection. It melted in your mouth.
#2. Toastettes pastries were thinner than Pop Tarts. Yet, it seemed as if they contained more flavor-packed fruit filling. It was smooth and didn’t taste or feel like there were any fillers.
#3. Finally, the Toastettes filling wasn’t too sweet. Now, I’m all for sugar. But, the Pop Tart’s extra sweet filling plus thick-sheet-of-sugary icing equals too sweet for me. However, the Toastettes pastry’s just right filling plus that dusting of sugar flakes formed a pastry dynamic duo paradigm that hasn’t been matched since.
Substitution please!
Almost a decade passed before I discovered another toaster pastry that won my heart.
Then they were discontinued as well.
The strawberry Fiber One toaster pastries were filling in the gap until that fateful day when I walked into my friendly neighborhood grocery store and couldn’t find them anymore. In fact, I couldn’t find them anywhere. Not even on Amazon.
Since then I have stumbled upon a few generic brand toaster pastries that are decent. Walmart and Dollar General brands come to mind. And, every now and then I’ll nibble on an unfrosted strawberry Pop Tart.
But nothing can compare to the exquisite toaster pastry delicacy that was once Toastettes.
