There is always an ongoing debate between being a specialist and being a multi-tasker. But now a days, the whole story revolves around the buzz word MULTITASKING.

But, does it really work or is just a cutcha?

Let’s dive deeper!!

I’ve been experiencing it since I started working that many tasks in hand at a time, would just haunt you for getting it completed on time and so you compromise quality. Several analytics have justified this fact.

Georgetown Professor Cal Newport suggested that a continuous, distraction-free work is so important to get the profoundness of desired work.
He mentioned, in his new book “Deep Work”, about the damages to oneself while multitask. Bouncing around from one task to other actually spoils your senses allowing you to focus.

Many researches have shown that multitask might give you a false sense of accomplishment for a short time but will prove to be harmful in long run.

University of London had found in one of its study that persons who multitask are found to have lower level of IQs. Psychologists say that these kind of people work at lower cognitive level and habitually they get addicted to instant contentment and in a way they become less patient. These lead to many behavioral changes in negative sense.

Even without knowing much scientific facts, we often use the “proverb” of our day to day life i.e., “expert advice”, so only specialized skills would lead you to be an expert of well-marked abilities.

But being surrounded with lots of supplies on multitasking in today’s scenario, we start to seek for second opinion on whether being a specialized one would be in favor of our benefits, so the answer is YES.

Specialization Over Multitasking

Let’s talk about our mean -

  • Specialized skill set : Specific skills lead you to have more preference to get selected. Formally, if we talk about job descriptions and responsibilities,it is incomplete without mentioning any specialized skill set. People with desired (or specific) skills get preferred over generalized skills.
It requires training and experience to master. Specialized skills set can graded into two — hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills can be defined, learnt, evaluated and measured but this is in contrast with soft skills. They can be learnt but get polished with time as it is more into behavioral analytics.
  • Move up the ladder : Being specialized would bring you growth in the distinctive field and gain more expertise. Moving up with the depth of knowledge enables you to get an ocean of opportunities. But every specialization has its own essential characteristics, so choose yours. :)
  • Quality execution : Specialists, by default, are considered to be the executives of quality. Experts are defined for the roles and procedures for the tasks being executed. This brings excellence in the work.
  • Trusted resource : It is the human tendency to get trusted that if anything is getting done by any specialist, that will be flawless and there will be no scope of doubts.
  • Less supervision : Experts do not flaw much and they handle their tasks very effectively and efficiently without any supervision. Hence, reduction in cost of quality control and direct expense in terms of added salary of supervisors.

Hope, you have got enough reasons to get yourself specialized in the field that interests you.
It is not that the multitasking is the ill-concept, but if you want to beat the competition you’ve to be a specialist because the high quality work congruence to — the amount of time and the intensity of focus and being productive in less time is the real need of today’s cosmos.
