Social media is a revolutionary platform on internet which drastically changed overall view of the world and has become an integral part of our society. Due to evolution and expansion of technology social media is becoming a vital tool for daily social interaction. The significance of social media in our world can be realized by the fact that nearly 2.65 Billion people on internet use this platform and this number is estimated to grow in upcoming years (Clement, 2019). Social media has brought a lot of benefits to our society however, social media has a considerable amount of negative impact on the youth. Social media has adversely affected the mental health of the teenagers and is turning them into antisocial generation.

Positive Aspects

Social media, despite its potential drawbacks, offers several positive aspects for mental health. The capacity to establish connections with support networks is one of the main advantages. People can use social media platforms to locate and join communities and support groups where they can exchange stories, get emotional support, and feel like they belong. This is especially helpful for those with mental health problems because these virtual communities can lessen feelings of loneliness and provide helpful guidance and support from others going through comparable struggles.

Social media has also had a major positive impact on raising awareness and educating people about mental health issues. By disseminating knowledge and increasing public awareness, social media campaigns and instructional materials contribute to the de-stigmatization of mental health issues. Increased awareness and empathy are fostered by the increased visibility of mental health issues and more candid conversations about them. Furthermore, a lot of mental health practitioners and organizations use social media to share helpful information, coping mechanisms, and self-help tools, opening up mental health support to a larger audience.

Furthermore, social media allows for self-expression and creativity, which might improve mental health. Users can share their creative work, life stories, and accomplishments with a large audience on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, and frequently receive affirmation and positive feedback in return. Participation in this activity can increase self-worth, give people a sense of achievement, and create a nurturing atmosphere where people feel important and connected. When utilized thoughtfully and productively, social media can greatly improve mental health by utilizing these beneficial features.

Negative Aspect

Despite these benefits, the negative impact of social media on mental health is a growing concern. Research indicates a strong link between excessive social media use and increased levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. One of the primary reasons for this is the culture of comparison fostered by social media. Users are constantly exposed to curated images and highlights of others’ lives, leading to unrealistic expectations and feelings of inadequacy. This phenomenon, often referred to as “social comparison,” can severely impact self-esteem and overall mental well-being.

Additionally, the pressure to maintain a perfect online persona can lead to stress and anxiety. Many users feel compelled to present an idealized version of their lives, which can be mentally exhausting and contribute to a sense of disconnection from one’s true self.
