Leh
Dos and don’ts when getting Leh’d
Juley!
That’s how the warm people of Ladakh greet everyone, yes even strangers. You have first of your dos, greet the Ladakhis you will only get warm greeting in return. Ideally you should be taking the Manali-Leh highway to reach Leh, they say it is better if you travel this highway on a soul moving bike than a 4 wheeled metal box. As for me I flew to Leh, it was quite an adventure itself, which brings me to first of the don’ts. If you reach Leh by a flight, rest completely that day. Everyone will advice just lie down and keep drinking water, just follow it. I did not take the advice seriously and had to suffer for that all along the trip.
Once you are rested through out the day, I suggest take a walk to downtown Leh. Next definite do would be indulge yourself in savouring some Tibetian cuisine. I loved Thukpa, gives you that extra water when you don’t feel thirsty because of the cold weather. When you go out of to visit places around Leh do not miss the grand landscape and the rather cheeky BRO signs which treat the landscape like a sexy lady.
Do take out time to visit the Leh market, try out some of the local fruits especially the apricots. Finally if you are flying out of Leh make sure you start for the airport early. All the arrival and departures at the Leh airport happen before 9 am/10 am. Being an Air force airport it has its weird and stricter security rules, but reaching early should take care of it.
