The thing is, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can work for a company like Valve for example, or many others in the Fortune 500 and find a workplace that is receptive to, or even expects your very best every single day and allows you the freedom to take on projects of your choosing. These are places where you can reach your full potential, learn valuable skills from those more experienced and be well compensated.
There isn’t anything wrong with building someone else’s dream, and it doesn’t mean you’re any less talented than someone who does want to build something on their own. Is Sheryl Sandberg any less talented than Mark Zuckerberg? In coding maybe, in other areas she’s more talented. Being the founder or entrepreneur doesn’t make you better than anyone else, and it certainly doesn’t mean you have some kind of Promethean drive that others lack.
There is more than one way to skin a cat.
