Title: Worth the read

Review: I had to read this book as a requirement for a Systematic Theology 2. I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Putnam’s work. In a time when people are quick to split over theological differences, Dr. Putnam examines reasons to divide over doctrine.
Here’s a spoiler, some of the contemporary issues we divide over today may not equate to division.

Title: Longing for an abridged version!

Review: This book is too scholarly for the average church member. This is a necessary book for the church today, put out by a solid publisher, but is difficult to get through. Part one is especially tough for a non-seminarian. I gave up and skimmed it for what interested me and the situation I find myself in. Part two is the saving grace of the work, more suited for the believing layman with some practical helps, insight and advice.

Review: Putman’s book could be much improved if he were disabused of his penchant for using feminine singular third-person pronouns when gender is unspecified.
Historically, the established rule has been to use masculine singular third-person pronouns when gender is unspecified. Only recently has this convention been abandoned by many, owing to the demands of the emasculating and rabidly feministic spirit of the present wicked age.
It is especially regrettable for otherwise worthy Christian authors to corrupt their works by cowardly capitulating to contemporary linguistic standards that represent subtle, or else not so subtle, denials of a biblical anthropology.

Title: When Doctrine Divides — Timely Book for Tumultuous Times

Review: I want to start by saying that Rhyne Putnam does a very neat job of explaining why doctrine divides the people of God.
Ive been part of the Christian circle for over 30 years; part of it as a result of being raised in church and part of it as a result of being an actual Christian.
As far as I can remember division has been present within the Christian faith. One wonders how is it possible that the people of God can’t be united. Someway somehow “division” finds its way among the people of God.
Putnam addresses this issue with a multilevel approach. He structures the book into two parts. The first part deals with the question “why we disagree about doctrine”? And the second part addresses the question, “what should we do about doctrinal disagreement?
In the first section Putnam identifies the source of the problem as the reader (as one would expect given that God is perfect), not the author of the Bible.
“Interpretive diversity abounds because human beings are frail creatures beset by natural limitations and impediments, as well as those imperfections caused by the brokenness of the present age.”
Putnam attributes doctrinal differences to how we reason, how we read, how we feel, our personal preferences (bias), theological training, fallen nature, among other factors. All of which he goes at great length to explain.
“We interpret texts with our own ingrained cultural and personal perspectives that color our readings. Every reader must acknowledge his or her own subjectivity, even when trying to make sense of biblical or doctrinal statements that are objectively true. We do not read books, watch television, or look at art as blank slates, nor do we come to the biblical text as neutral observers who passively receive what it offers us. Instead, we are active readers who come to texts with our own unique questions, experiences, and presuppositions. Years of enculturation, family background, language training, and personality development coalesce to create our subjective horizon or frame of reference.”
This portion explains rather well and considers the fact that every individual will come to the text with certain kind of optics. Not implying that the message of the text varies depending upon who reads it (the message of the text is one — what God intended it) but that individuals may understand differently simply because of their “lens”.
The second part is left to address the question, “what should we do about doctrinal disagreement?
From the outset, even if we hold an erroneous doctrinal position, once we have formed our initial position it’s hard to sway us. In addition to this our own confirmation bias will usually hinder us from seeing otherwise.
A point of contention identified by the author is what he calls theological minimalism and theological maximalists.
The minimalist “denies the need for any essential Christian doctrine or truth”. On the other extreme we find the maximalist which to them every point is a major point.
Both extremes are bad in their own merit as they contribute to additional and unnecessary contention.
Putnam brings to the table that the body of Christ is comprised of different body parts and as such we won’t all be exactly the same. The underlying message being that we need to accept our differences and love each other in spite of them.
Not every point of disagreement is a call for contention and division.
However, by no means Putnam suggests that we need to compromise and accept false doctrine “in the Christian camp”. His position is that:
“We must guard diligently those doctrines that we believe are essential to the Christian faith.”
And that unity at the expense of truth is false unity.
This is a good read that will help any young and seasoned Christian mature some more. It gives us a very good understanding to how we arrive at different “destinations” and also gives a good framework how we are to handle doctrinal differences.
But most importantly, it reminded me that behind every idea, thought or doctrinal interpretation there is a person and regardless of our differences we are called to love them.

Title: Of Abduction, Guardrails and Fragrant Oil on Aaron’s Beard

Review: “When Doctrine Divides the People of God” is an important and insightful attempt to answer two big questions from an evangelical point of view. Part One deals with, Why We Disagree About Doctrine? and Part Two covers What We Should Do About Doctrinal Disagreement?
Pros — Given what the Bible says about unity (e.g. oil on Aaron’s beard), it’s a worthy subject. The breadth of research is impressive. The section on how we feel differently was especially interesting. The last chapter has some excellent advice.
Cons — The first part of the book was impressive, but featured long chapters filled with a lot of technical jargon (e.g. abduction). In Chapter Seven, the author engages with the idea of theological triage. Although much of this is helpful, I found the author’s use of a “guardrail” metaphor problematic. “Taxonomies provide guardrails in which faithful Christians can navigate their different readings of Scripture. The guardrail separates essential doctrines from nonessential tenets. A guardrail is an important metaphor because it gives the driver freedom to move across different lanes while also protecting her from driving off the cliff. No one concerned for their own well-being wants to ride right up against the guardrails.” I agree that identifying which doctrines are essential in relation to the gospel can erect guardrails between the gospel and heresy, but the “non-essential tenets” are non-heretical beliefs based on biblical texts. Those texts were put there for our well-being. I grew up in a Baptist church that would have fallen into what the author calls “Traditionalism” on the Calvinism-Arminianism issues. We treated the related texts like they were beyond the guardrail, and it impacted our priorities and practices. My observation was that since we treated those texts like they were unhealthy, we defaulted to what Trevin Wax calls “revivalist impulses”.
Overall, this book is an impressive contribution to a very important topic.
