Well… this is the thing. For a long time, a lot of writers, as well as people who were dealing with writers, have been saying that writing every day (or at least as often as you can) helps you become a better writer- and I completely agree with this…
This kind of approach is excellent for creating the discipline that is needed and it helps a whole lot with refining your writing, creating your distinctive style and generally fixing a whole lot of issues that writers face…
That being said… I am quite convinced that the writers who started advising others to set daily writing goals and do their best to keep up with them never thought that everything that a person writes should be published…. (Actually I have seen a lot of individuals, who still didn’t realize this, but that is a subject for another time)….. what they were talking about is the idea that each and every one of us should take enough time every day to work on our craft and finding ways to improve it, just like anyone else… no one expects a musician who is practicing every day to come up with a new song every day…. ( I mean, he can… but they will be pretty SHi!!y songs)….
Now, I have spent a long time working in various newsrooms and I know very well what it means to have to be able to write every single day, no matter what. I am also quite proud of my work, I am really… really good at what I do and I always finish the job in the best way that is possible under given circumstances
I can honestly tell you that there are still days when I get back home, turn on the TV to see did the story I think was bad ended up really that bad- and truly surprise myself by what a good job I have done… also there are days when I feel like calling the guys in the Master Room and telling them to stop signing my name when that story goes on air….
For no matter how much we try, it is impossible for anyone to keep producing material of the same quality day after day….. some days will be very good- others will make us question every reason why do we keep molesting ourselves and keep writing….. This is something we all have to accept
In the meantime, since you did take up the challenge- you have to finish it (Even if you are not happy with your daily output… you will be much more unhappy with yourself if you do not stick with it and have this as another unfinished project)
try looking at it as a learning experience and, since Medium has these wonderful little things that telling you what has been read and how, you will have an excellent chance to test out different things in your writing and see what functions in which way… as well as what kind of subjects, maybe even what kind of styles that you take upon do people like more and which ones do they like less….
BY the time you are done… even if you are completely unhappy with Everything you wrote during the previous three months… you will still know much more about your own writing, about how it is received by what kind of audiences… etc…. that you did when the challenge started. And that is what 100 naked words is about (The way I see it)
