Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was twenty-three and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age thirty-eight. Richard Bushman, an esteemed cultural historian and a practicing Mormon, moves beyond the popular stereotype of Smith as a colorful fraud to explore his personality, his relationships with others, and how he received revelations. An arresting narrative of the birth of the Mormon Church, Jo

Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling by Richard Lyman Bushman Book Review

Title: A balanced portrait of a controversial figure
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2019
Review: I was hesitant to read this book at first, as it seems that most of the literature about Joseph Smith is either scathingly skeptical or blatantly dogmatic. But I was pleasantly surprised to find the book very neutral, with a fair treatment of both sides of the controversy. The author does admit his status as a church member and believer, but he goes to great lengths to present witness statements and evidence from all sides. He presents the information without putting forth his own conclusions to the reader (although one can assume his position).

Richard Bushman asks a lot of questions without giving us an answer. Some events in Joseph Smith’s life simply cannot be explained by logic, while at the same time, he was quite clearly a man with character flaws. There is no way to prove the truth of Joseph Smith’s claims, while at the same time, he did not behave as a pure megalomaniac. All of Joseph Smith’s actions were in service of his vision, and everything else in his life was secondary to that. Does that make him inspired? Does it make him crazy? Can a man be both?

The author’s dedication to fairness is frustrating at times. He leaves out several of the more fantastic (miraculous?) tellings of events, while also rushing past some of the more dubious (nefarious?) tellings of events in Joseph Smith’s life. Not only does he refuse to commit to either explanation, he seems to avoid the most sensationalist events on either point. I think this will leave believers feeling like he didn’t tell the whole story (which if he would have, certainly would convince people of the glorious truth!), while it will leave skeptics feeling like he didn’t tell the whole story (which if he would have, certainly would convince people of the horrible truth!) In the end, Richard Bushman leaves it to the reader to decide by the very means that Joseph Smith insisted upon: divine revelation. Frustrating, just as Joseph Smith was in life.

Side Note: I read this book concurrently with “Raven,” the story of Jim Jones. I was interested to see if there were any parallels between the life of the true and verified cult leader and mass murderer, and the person of Joseph Smith, who is often accused of/assumed to be a narcissistic cult leader. There were some parallels, but not in the ways I expected. Both men were raised of dominant mothers and weak fathers. Both created a religious movement. Both enjoyed influence almost solely on the strength of personality. Both were unusually creative and thought unconventionally. But the comparisons end there.

In the end, I could draw no significant meaning between the man who consumed people for his own self-aggrandizement, and the man who let people come and go freely; between the man who preyed upon children and women, elderly and underprivileged, and the man who almost exclusively dealt with the male peers of his class, and extended full authority and power to the same; between the man who hoarded wealth to serve his own vices, and the man who begged everyone’s last dime, including his own, to serve his vision; between the man whose ultimate fantasy was to be so powerful as to command people to die for him, and the man who ultimately died to protect his people.

Was Joseph Smith a prophet or a swindler? Decide for yourself.

Title: Fair treatment of Joseph Smith
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020
Review: This book is not sanitized. It is excellent history.

Sometimes folks try to examine Smith through a filtered lens. I had trouble finding a lens in this book. What I found in this book is fair and honest history.

If you are looking for a book that is critical or antagonizing towards Smith and his life. This is not your book. If you are looking for a book that overlooks or ignores the faults and flaws of Smith. This is not your book.

Critics of Smith and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will not be completely happy with this book. Even though the book shows Smiths warts and flaws from his life. It also gives a fair treatment of Smith and his decisions and circumstances.

Folks looking for a Pollyanna view of Smiths life will be disappointed. The author does not paint over any mold from a historical perspective.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I don’t necessarily believe that Joseph Smith has to be perfect in order for me to respect him as a leader and a real Prophet. I really enjoyed the book. I reference it regularly in talking to folks about Smith and his life. It is a good and honest history book about Joseph Smith.

Title: Excellent history of Joseph Smith — founder of the Mormon Church
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018
Review: Very informative history of Joseph Smith the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormon). As far as I can tell Bushman has provided a historically accurate accounting. He does not whitewash the history like some LDS historians. This is a “warts and all” history, that shows both the positive and amazing things Joseph Smith accomplished while including a description of some of his faults and shortcomings. I highly recommend this book for people interested in LDS history.

Title: Quite dense, and a bit optimistic
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2020
Review: Very detailed account of the life of JS. It is very dry a lot of the time and the author is a bit optimistic about some details of JS’ life. Especially when referring to his plural wives, he basically states that since there is no information about JS’ sexual relationship with any of them it cannot be assumed that he had that type of relationship. Doubtful. Overall good summary of the life of JS, but a bit too apologetic and optimistic.

Title: Who was Joseph Smith, really? Start here.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2007
Review: The beauty of well-structured histories is, they remind us not to look at incidents or facts baldly, but in context. Even documented observations of subject contemporaries need not be taken as evidence, but as mere viewpoints of the time. Otherwise, much of what was written about Lincoln before he was president would lead us to believe he was an oaf. I say this because, whether you are cracking open Rough Stone Rolling as pro-Joseph Smith or anti… or even if you’re just leaning a certain way on the fence, please leave all presuppositions at the door. They’re not welcome — not if you want a fair & balanced summary of what the man was all about. Granted, Bushman is Mormon, but when writing this book he obviously shelved his beliefs for the sake of accuracy. Here we get to see Smith with all the warts and foibles a human is allowed to have. His judgement wasn’t always on the money and his character not always “celestial.” Nevertheless, here was a man who influenced more than presidents, statesmen or philosophers, and whose legacy continues to thrive. When the PBS documentary “The Mormons” aired, I heard the members didn’t care for the way some of the talking heads spoke of Smith. Well, I didn’t care much for the polished PR Joseph Smith the Mormon church tried to sell over the years, but the man written of in Rough Stone Rolling is one I can buy, even admire. If you care nothing for the church, but love American history, this well-written book will entertain and give you insight into a period we don’t hear enough about. And if you are interested about Smith and the Mormons, start with this book. You will not be disappointed.
