3 Ways to Instantly Boost Your Confidence

From attracting mates, to landing job interviews, and being a leader and feeling good in general, confidence is a great skill to possess. And I say it’s a skill because, well, it is.
You either have it or you don’t. But just because you don’t have it now, doesn’t mean you can’t work at it until you do. It’s something you need to practice. Here are 3 ways to instantly boost your confidence:
Speak Differently
This doesn’t mean speak in a different language, or trying to put on a fancy accent to sound posh. It just means being more deliberate in the words you use. Take the following comparison:
Could I perhaps just use your pen for a short while?
vs.
Would you mind if I borrowed your pen?
Which of the two sounds more confident? I’m not sure about you, but I would vote for the latter any day. Notice in the first example, we’re using words like ‘perhaps’ and ‘just’ among many other filler words. In doing this we’re already undermining our position.
In comparison, in the second example we are more firm with our question, and therefore more confident. We’re not being rude or curt, just firm. We don’t sugar-coat our question with phrases like “a short while”, which might subliminally indicate that we’re simply not worthy of holding the pen for more than a couple of seconds. Surely we’re worth more than that aren’t we?
By being firm and direct with our question, avoiding words that might indicate inferiority, we automatically sound more confident.
Technique number 1: Speak differently
Walk Differently
The way we carry ourselves says 2 things about us. It shows that we have either a muscular imbalance in our torso, or it shows how confident we are in our own skin. Despite the problems that a muscular imbalance may pose, we’re more interested in the confidence factor for this discussion.
When we walk with slouched shoulders, head down, and eyes focused on the ground, we immediately convey one thing: weakness. We demonstrate, perhaps not even knowingly, that we have let the world conquer us.
But we must show the world we have not!
The way we can shift the way in which others perceive us, is to walk upright, with our shoulders back, chin high, and eyes forward. In doing this, we look as though we are ready to take on the world, and we are not afraid of the challenges it may throw at us. By looking ahead, we also are in a better position to give others eye contact, which is another powerful identifier of a confident personality.
Technique number 2: Walk differently
Think Differently
The way we act is almost certainly a product of the way we think. In terms of what makes or breaks a confident person, this is perhaps the most important.
Negative thoughts don’t just show on the inside, they show outwardly as well. The reason for this is that negative thoughts create an aura of negativity around someone, that is noticeable not only for the one carrying this aura, but also the ones surrounding it.
Negativity breeds more negativity.
By contrast, if our mind is filled with positive thoughts, then our actions, and therefore our aura, will be positive. Just as negativity brings with it only more negativity, positivity breeds only more positivity.
The sooner we can create room in our minds solely for positive thought, the sooner we can begin our transformation into the confident individual we wish to be.
Technique number 3: Think differently
Remember that, just as with everything, confidence needs practice. And if it feels uncomfortable at first, just remember the old saying:
Fake it til’ you make it!
