The trick is distinguishing between what we acknowledge to be the greatest masterpieces of film and the movies we personally like the best; not always the same thing. Example: I can acknowledge Lawrence of a Arabia was a total masterpiece. The cinematography, the script, the acting… but it doesn’t resonate with me for whatever reason.

Below are my two favorites by genre, and in no particular order because I can’t possibly narrow or rate them to such a small number. That’s like saying to someone who’s been listening to music for 30 years “what are you seven favorite songs?” Too much amazing art of equal quality gets left out.

These must be listed for the betterment of those modern youts who do not understand the meaning of “great movie.”
