Introduction

We all know we owe our existence to the very intricate and delicate systems of our planet, including all the way from its position in space as it lies in the small band of habitable zone of the Sun to the right amount of forests and trees that produce enough oxygen and other essentials of life for us. In fact, we exist in a complex structure woven of all the different ecosystems, species, climate and amounts of different constituents that make our planet.

But we are already destroying this system to which we owe our very existence. Like the lumber who is sawing the branch he is sitting on.

The theme for Earth day 2023 is “Invest In Our Planet”.

This investment could be in any form that helps our planet get in a better position that it now is. It could be that you plant trees, reuse items, participate in sustainable fashion, go for a cleanup or help such groups which participate in such activities, reduce pollution by not using plastics, or spread awareness and climate literacy. Any act that will make things better for our planet and its future is an investment.

How can we help?

Here are some ways to improve the condition of our planet:

  1. Planting Trees, not only helps with greenhouse gas emissions but also prevents soil erosion and helps bring rain
  2. Reusing Items
  3. Saying ‘No’ to Plastic and using Recyclable materials like paper instead
  4. Using Renewable forms of Energy, if possible, or saving electricity
  5. Saving Water
  6. Not Wasting Food
  7. Using things that last longer than those which’ll need to be replaced over
  8. Contributing to local “Green Groups” or organizations that participate in events like Tree Plantations, Cleanup Drives, etc.
  9. Properly dispose your unwanted items, like electrical equipment or handle over to recycling organizations as ending up in landfills they cause much harm to the environment due to the materials and heavy elements used in making them
  10. Use products made of natural ingredients rather than chemical ones like detergents, soaps, etc. as it all ends up in river, streams and oceans and is dangerous and fatal for aquatic life.

These are just a few ways. There are still many many more ways in which you can contribute to making the planet better for all — that includes all living beings. And always remember the three Rs of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. Be climate conscious when buying anything, and environment aware when doing anything that your actions and steps do not harm the planet.
