Farringdon is a relatively small district in Central London, in the London Borough of Islington.

Though the area has no real formal boundary, it’s come to mean the area around Farringdon Station.

The area typically defined as Farringdon is split into two oddly named districts called Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without, which refers to how the district was originally split between the actual City of London (Farringdon Within) and outside of the City of London (Farringdon Without).

History In Farringdon

There are a few interesting sights embedded in this small district. On St John’s Lane, you’ll find the small Museum of the Order of St John, which tells the unique story of an ancient religious order. It’s a small but beautiful museum with interesting items, such as rare armour and a cannon gifted by Henry VIII.

The museum is housed in St John’s Gate, where Dr Samuel Johnson worked tirelessly to create some of the first dictionaries. This small area was once the haunt of famous authors, artists and writers, including Charles Dickens. Farringdon is a great district for exploring some of old London — and it retains much of that age-old charm today.

The London Charterhouse

This complex of old buildings has been home to many important historical moments in London’s age-old history. In fact, the complex dates back to around 1371 and has been a monastery, almshouse, mansion and boys’ school in its 700-year history.

St James’ Church Garden

This beautiful tranquil garden lies within Farringdon and is frequented by locals and office workers alike who bask in its relative quietness as embedded in one of the capital’s busiest districts.

There are many hidden green gems like this in London which all help give the city its reputation as one of the greenest cities in the world.

Hatton Gardens

Hatton Gardens is London’s Historic Diamond District. It’s not far from Farringdon Station and is chock full of beautiful fine jewellery shops, leather markets, restaurants and coffee shops.

The area also hosted a famous heist — the Hatton Garden safe deposit robbery — involving over £14 million jewellery. The heist was famously carried out by six elderly men, the oldest of whom was 76.
