Please don’t be a Brat: A Meditation on Entitlement

Entitle — “to give (a person or thing) a title, right, or claim to something;”

I think we’re all a little entitled as kids. It makes sense. I mean, our parents try hard to give us everything we need and they never really ask for appreciation. Sure, they might teach us to say the words.

Sally takes a cookie from the kind old woman. “Say thank you, Sally” her mother calls from behind her.

“Thank you!”

Awws follow the adorableness of the young tike who could care less about the old woman. She just wants a cookie.

Is this a bad thing? Probably not entirely. That is, not when you’re a kid. Even if it is bad, how are you going to solve it? Deprive your kids?

Ultimately, I have no problem with somewhat entitled children under that age of, let’s say twelve. (Note: This is not so say that I approve of those bratty kids you see in malls sometimes. That’s beyond lovingly taking care of a child for little thanks and into ruining them for society.)Twelve to Fifteen is about when things should be solidified for the kid, they’re still learning here. But after that point (16+), let’s get one thing straight, you are not owed anything.

“But human rights!” the masses screamed. Yes, I know. We all have certain inalienable rights here in America. I’m talking about the extra stuff we just like to do. For people in highschool, that’s being driven to a friend’s house, getting something extra from the grocery store, transportation and support for any number of extra activities. You are not entitled to ANY of these things. For adults…
