The Golden Temple, Amritsar

The Golden Temple in Amritsar is the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. The legendary Golden Temple is actually just a small part of this huge gurdwara complex, known to Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib.

It is also famous for the Amrit Sarovar which is a tank that surrounds the central shrine excavated by the 4 th Sikh Guru Ram Das in 1577 and the water is believed to have healing properties.

The architecture of the Golden Temple in Amritsar is a mix of Islamic and Hindu styles of architecture .The lower level is adorned with marble and decorated with murals of animals and flowers.Above this rises a shimmering second level, encased in intricately engraved gold panels, and topped by a dome gilded with 750kg of gold.

In the inner sanctum priests and musicians continuously chant from the Sikh Holy Book,The Guru Granth Sahib further intensifying the atmosphere inside.
