This is actually an understated difference. I left Waterloo for the Bay Area in 2005 when I graduated from UW but I’d been used to living with roommates as a student so continuing to do so didn’t seem weird to me at all, which meant that I was spending <$1k/mo on rent (this has obviously increased since then but the cost difference between renting your own 1 bedroom place VS sharing a 4 BR with 3 people remains large).

Consequently, I was able to save a lot more than the original piece suggests by living a significantly less lavish lifestyle. That said, I did find life in SF to be more culturally interesting than it had been in K-W at the time.
