Same Same, But…

“Ugh, this coffee is awful. I don’t get it. I did everything exactly the same as yesterday. Yesterday the coffee was really good — not perfect, but pretty darn good — Not great, but I’d be happy if I got that at a café — content at least. I wouldn’t be upset. I liked it.”

“Hmm, honey. I don’t know,” she said without looking up from her book.

“Same water, same temp. I weighed the beans to a tenth of gram, and the water to a hundredth of an ounce.”

“Is that the half-caf?” she said, swiping her thumb across her lip and turning the page.

“No, it’s decaf today.”

“It was decaf yesterday?” she said peeking over the top of the book.

“Well, yeah, the only thing different is today is decaf and yesterday was regular — but other than that, it’s exactly the same. Exactly. I don’t get it.”

“So you used different beans today?”

“I — well — yes, I guess so.”

“So I guess that’s it then?” she said, adjusting her glasses.

“Right, I guess so.”
